CARRIE'S MISSIONARY EXPERIENCE

June 1991 – 10 day missionary trip to Cuernavaca, Mexico with a Youth Group from a Catholic Church in Mpls., MN. We stayed with Benedictine Sisters who educated us on the social injustices in their country. We also visited very poor areas and helped build houses.

January 2002 to December 2002 – Missionary at Love Botswana Outreach Mission, Africa. My primary role was office manager. I also assisted Jerry & Jana Lackey, the mission founders, taught art to high school students and served in children’s ministry on Sundays. It was a great experience that opened my eyes to the realities of missionary life. It’s not easy being away from everything and everyone familiar to you. I have a new appreciation for missionaries to other countries and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to spend a year of my life in Africa. I was blessed with 4 safari trips (a dream since I was a child) and making new friends from another culture. Another highlight was attending Love Botswana Outreach Bible School in the evenings. Initially I registered out of boredom (nothing to do in the evenings!), but I ended up gaining great friends and greater knowledge and understanding of God’s Word. I was the only American and part of the very first graduating class at the Bible Institute – awesome!

June 2004 – 3 week Missionary Trip to Swaziland, Africa with Christ For the Nations Bible Institute & Bruce Wilkinson. We were part of Beat the Drum for AIDS movement started by Bruce Wilkinson. He recruited college students for week-long AIDS training in every high school in Swaziland, Africa. I was a Team Mentor and my role was to educate high school teachers on AIDS, while the other teammates educated the students. At each high school we showed the movie "Beat the Drum", and promoted abstinence. At the week’s end, kids were asked to make commitments to abstain from sex until marriage. We also shared the gospel with many students and many received Jesus as their Savior.
